Directorate General of Antiquities

​​Responsibilities  

1- Participate in drawing up the general policies of the Ministry related to antiquities.

2- Preparing periodic plans and programs to implement its activities.

3- Supervising operations related to antiquities, while protecting, preserving, and highlighting their cultural and historical importance.

4- Registering cultural heritage sites in the National Tentative List and the World Heritage List, supervising them and following up on the implementation of all decisions issued by the World Heritage Committee.

5- Supervising the Ministry's sites included in the World Heritage List, and following up on related work.

6- Suggesting plans for excavation and surveying of submerged antiquities.

7- Supervising, facilitating, and coordinating surveys and excavations for underwater antiquities.

8- Develop Omani cadres working in the field of antiquities excavation and conservation.

9- Supervising the preparation and management of castles, forts and all historical buildings in the Sultanate in a manner that highlights their importance and historical role in the Omani Culture.

10- Establishing and developing scientific relations in the field of archaeological studies with relevant internal and external scientific organizations and institutions.

11- Carrying out and Supervising restoration and maintenance works for historical and archaeological buildings and monuments.

12- Supervising scientific studies and research related to the field and issuing relevant bulletins, publications and periodicals in coordination with the Research and Studies Department at the Ministry.

13- Representing the Sultanate in related international conferences and meetings held inside or outside the Sultanate.
