Directorate General of Museums

Responsibilities​

  • Preparing periodic plans and programs in its field of work.

  • Participate in formulating the general policies of the Ministry related to museums.

  • Supervising the establishment, organization and management of museums, including private museums.

  • Developing Omani cadres working in the field of museums.

  • Establishing and developing scientific relations with international museums, institutions and organizations working in the field of museums, both internally and externally.

  • Licensing museums and private heritage houses in accordance with the approved laws and regulations.

  • Suggesting plans to support and develop museums and follow up the approved ones.

  • Participate in preparing the necessary studies for the establishment of museums in the future as needed.

  • Introducing the importance of museums and their cultural role and encouraging those interested to view its collections.

  • Supervising and regulating the work of the museums.

  • Providing technical support to the various museums through conducting related studies and research in coordination with the concerned authorities.

  • Submitting appropriate proposals for the development and formulation of public policies that include museum management, collection management, cultural education, exhibitions, visitor services, research and publications.

  • Providing museums with archaeological finds and necessary devices and equipment in coordination with the concerned divisions of the Ministry.

  • Supervising the periodic maintenance operations for the museums, according to specific maintenance programs, in coordination with the concerned divisions in the Ministry.

  • Representing the Sultanate in international conferences and meetings, held inside or outside the Sultanate, related to its field of work.

  • Participation in specialized meetings and practical seminars related to museums internally and externally.​
