Inauguration of the 4th Omani Geological Heritage Exhibition at Al Hazm Castle

The 4th edition of the Omani Geological Heritage Exhibition, themed 'Sustainability and Job Opportunities,' was officially opened today at Al Hazm Castle in the Wilayat of Al Rustaq, South Al Batinah Governorate. The event was held under the auspices of H.E. Engineer Masoud bin Saeed Al Hashimi, Governor of South Al Batinah. Organised by the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism (MHT) in collaboration with the Office of the Governor of South Al Batinah, Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), and the Geological Society of Oman, the exhibition aims to diversify museum initiatives that enhance heritage and tourism destinations across various governorates.

The exhibition, running until the end of June 2025, reflects the Ministry's efforts to highlight the significance of geological heritage in the Sultanate of Oman, ensure its preservation, and promote its sustainability. It features six sections, including the story of geological heritage, the geological diversity and history of the Sultanate of Oman, the formation of Oman's land throughout geological history, the importance of preserving geological heritage, job opportunities in geological tourism, and a section dedicated to the geology of Al Batinah South Governorate, showcasing its rich and diverse geological features.

The exhibition also displays several notable geological artifacts, including an 800-million-year-old fossil, 3D scientific models of the extinct primitive elephant discovered in Dhofar's 'Idem' area, and a model of the extinct dinosaur whose fossilised remains were found in Al Khoudh, Wilayat of Al Seeb, alongside other unique geological fossils.

Said Harub Al Obaidani, the Director-General of Museums at the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, highlighted that the exhibition is part of the ministry's plan to promote heritage sites and investments, create diverse and attractive tourism products, and engage all segments of society, including visitors to Al Hazm Castle, academics, teachers, and students. He noted that the timing of the exhibition aligns with the Ministry's promotional campaign 'Change the Atmosphere in South Al Batinah,' which coincides with the governorate's preparations for the 'Experience South Al Batinah' festival in January 2025.

Engineer Hussein bin Ali Al Ghafri, Director, Geological Heritage Department, emphasised that the exhibition includes interactive models explaining fossils, accompanied by descriptions, display screens, and simplified information about Oman's geology. This year, a dedicated section focuses on the unique geology of South Al Batinah. Additionally, the exhibition highlights opportunities for job creation in geological heritage projects, particularly for small and medium enterprises, tour operators, and guides.

Al Ghafri stressed that the exhibition aligns with the ministry's commitment to developing and diversifying museum initiatives in the Sultanate of Oman and raising awareness of the importance of preserving geological heritage. These efforts support Oman Vision 2040, which prioritises enhancing citizenship, identity, heritage and national culture.
