Muscat International Book Fair hosts panel on ‘Oman through the eyes of German women’ featuring ARTE’s documentary series ‘Adventure in Oman’

As part of its cultural programme, the Muscat International Book Fair hosted a panel discussion titled 'Oman Through the Eyes of German Women,' led by Nadja Frenz, German filmmaker and journalist. The session highlighted her exceptional experience in producing documentary films about the Sultanate of Oman in collaboration with the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, as part of efforts to promote Oman's cultural and tourism identity on the global stage.

The panel focused on a two-part documentary series titled 'Adventure in Oman,' which aired on ARTE, the Franco-German cultural channel. The series offers a unique glimpse into Oman's landscapes, traditions, and people. It captures the natural beauty of Oman, from the rose-filled terraces of Jebel Akhdar, where fragrant rosewater is distilled, to the golden sands of the Sharqiyah desert and the frankincense trees of Dhofar. The episodes also tell deeply human stories that highlight the cultural and social diversity of Oman, reflecting its values of tolerance and coexistence.

The first episode, 'Desert Winds and Frankincense Scent,' features individuals such as Hameed Al Mugheiry, who runs a desert camp blending traditional Bedouin life with modern hospitality. From the Sharqiyah sands to the green mountains of Dhofar, the viewer meets Musallam Al Amri, who harvests frankincense, symbolising the deep bond between people and nature. In the capital, Muscat, traditions coexist with modernity, exemplified by fashion designer Amal Al Raisi, who fuses Omani heritage with contemporary elegance. Her mentorship of young designers reflects broader social shifts in Oman.

The film also explores Omani cuisine through chef Dina Makki, who presents a rich fusion of flavours influenced by Arab, Indian, and East African traditions. It captures the vibrancy of fish markets, palm groves, and aromatic spices, each ingredient telling the story of Oman's trading legacy and generous hospitality.

The second episode, 'Blooming Roses and Sea Breezes,' highlights Oman's natural and cultural diversity through inspiring stories such as that of Al Anoud Al Salmi, a climbing coach showcasing the wonders of Oman's outdoors, and Ali Al Amri, a farmer who continues the age-old tradition of rosewater distillation. The episode also features Ehdaa Al Brawaniyah, a diving instructor symbolising the evolving role of Omani women and the importance of empowerment in society. Royal Cavalry horsemen and kitesurfing coach, Ayman Al Ghafri, reflect the energetic spirit of Omani youth. With its striking visuals and moving stories, the series embodies a harmonious blend of heritage and modernity, echoing Oman's forward-looking vision for sustainable development.

The panel session provided an opportunity to learn about the making of the documentary and behind-the-scenes insights, while exploring the cultural and environmental richness of the Sultanate. 'Adventure in Oman' is more than a documentary, it is an invitation to discover a land thriving with its people, traditions, and breathtaking nature, offering a universal message that celebrates the beauty and diversity of Oman's ancient heritage.
